How many times have you bought something out of impulse? And after a few days you realized you did not need that thing at all! How many times have you signed a contract or agreed to do something and after a few days you cannot explain, even to yourself the rationale of that decision?
Chances are, during those times you were driven by emotions.
I have been listening to Joyce Meyer’s Power Thought Series recently and I am learning from it a lot. It gives me some simple statements that I can think and re-think to win the battle over my mind. Simple things that we often forget because we fail to declare it to ourselves. One of the power thought statements she gave was:
“I Do Not Make Decisions Based On My Feelings”
I cannot count the number of times anymore that I have made bad decisions simply because I was in an emotional high- it may be a positive or a negative emotion. Either way, majority of those decisions I regret. I should have thought about it more, I should have waited, I should have not done that at all- just a few of my “should have-could have” list after I make an emotional decision. We have to understand that emotions of the heart fluctuates faster than the stock market. One minute we are on cloud 9 and then another we are falling on our emotional trench. The bible says:
The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? [Jeremiah 17:9]
Indeed, who can understand the roller-coaster of emotions that we have!? What I learned from people and from my own experience as well is that, we need to let the emotions that are stirred up in us, settle down before making a decision. Sometimes it will take hours, days, maybe even months- but who cares! I am better off waiting for my brain to kick in than letting my heart decide. It is a proven fact that wherever our heart goes, we follow! The King James Version of Proverbs 23:7, opens as:
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he…[excerpt Proverbs 23:7, KJV]
You will even see this exact same concept even in non-biblical teachings- because it is true! Our mind and our emotions leads us to decisions that will ultimately define who we are. Why do you think advertisers all over the world appeals to your emotions? They are all geared towards driving us into an emotional decision!
Now, if the heart and the mind is deceitful and cannot be trusted, how then can we make good decisions? Now that we know what leads us into making decisions, which is our heart; the key is not to ignore our heart! Our heart is what makes us human in the first place. We cannot simply make 100% logical decisions every time! The key, is to lead our hearts! Make it tender, not hardened and stubborn! The Psalmist says:
Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. [Psalm 37:4, NIV]
Ahh, there is that verse again! God knows our weak spot! That is why He tells us to delight ourselves in His presence. Soak up your heart with God’s word! Marinate it with His presence! That is the only way we can win it over and make better decisions in life.
There is no other way for our hearts to be made right but through that- the simple choice is this: make your heart delight in God or make it delight in the world’s pleasures and offers. We all know where the latter leads us to- I know you know, everyone of us have tried following that path before.
So the next time you make a major decision in your life, maybe it would help to recite this power thought: ”I Do Not Make Decisions Based On My Feelings” give it time, soak up with the word of God and then decide!
